When sensed from above everything feels so differently. From above the Dutch light can be even more magical. A river curves gently around long sweeping shadows. From above it becomes even more apparent that every stretch of land here is touched by human hands.

From above my son feels strong and proud in his inaugural flight. A precious moment to remember, from below.

It takes two……

It takes two days, weeks, months, etc. to realize what you want to do. It takes a breath…..or two, to not always be judgmental and opinionated. It takes two years or decades to figure out that not everything needs to be rationalized.

When I hit August and see the colors change I feel the inspiration taking a break too. At least a month or two. Light changes though. That slightly different angle how light illuminates subjects can completely change how I perceive things. Without explanation and hesitation I start to see and feel images again.

The change of the season nearing the end of the year is introduced with longer and deeper shadows. Prettier light too. Just observe the leaves and how light comes filtered through. That light my friend, is what photography is all about. Don’t be bothered with genres and gear, just enjoy that light.

Weekend starts with shadows and hope

2010, Photography

This Eastern weekend starts with a replacement for my Ricoh GR Digital I. It is a GR Digital III and again I am surprised how good this camera is. Just be careful with the exposures, because it is pretty prone to highlight clipping.

Today, April 2nd, is World Autism Awareness Day. An increasing number of our world population has autism and our fast paced society will make it harder and harder for them to cope and participate. Regular readers know that my son has autism too and last September I published a series of photographs where I tried to interpret his complexity of handling information, eye for detail, and always present anxiety. For those interested you can view this series here.

Light and shadows

Light and shadows by Wouter Brandsma
For me photography is all about the search for light and shadows. How to capture it, to evoke it, to show it. For instance, in the woods I find framing hard, because of the clustering of all the trees and the absense of a clear focal point. Shadows of trees or branches on the other hand can form beautiful subjects. I find the shadow details in digital photography very difficult and I make the shadows much darker to loose much of those captured details.

I still think it is hard to find the holy grail for me. Darker or brighter. Avoiding blown highlights, but not much mid grey either.

So this is no musing about what application or tool to do the job for me. And I am not discussing any processing method either, although tips and insights are of course always welcome.

It is more about what direction to go. I consiously compose in traditional 2:3 format since I am so familiair with it. I tried 4:3 and 1:1, but 2:3 is still what I like and how I see. I carefully frame everything I want within that format, although mostly unconsiously. I use shadows as lines to structure the composition, but I still like to keep it simple. That is why I keep coming back to the same places.

Last weekend I saw the work of photographer John Marrocco that reminded me of my own work. He too focusses on simple subjects, form and factor. Not the event itself is the pinnacle of our photography, but the subject becomes the event. Events are not always there and you can’t always be in time for events, but subjects are everywhere.
