Between my weekly post from my 365 project I wanted to publish another series of photographs from last Saturday’s 67th commemoration of operation Market Garden. Now, this isn’t exactly the first time I published photographs from this event. I did so in 2008 and 2009. It was however the first time I didn’t use one of my compact cameras, but a Leica M8 with a Leica 35mm Summilux and a Zeiss 50mm Sonnar. And unlike before this time the weather wasn’t as pretty, so the fast lens came in handy.
(Those little blobs to the left are not dust speckles, but parachutes. This is what you get when you shoot at f/1.4)
In 1994 when they commemorated this operation, both the organizers and many of the still living veterans from the UK and Canada actually thought the 50th was about the last time to commemorate this. But 17 years later and the event still takes place. It is interesting and wonderful to realize that current generations who only learned about World War II from their grand parents, history books, documentaries, and movies, still remember those days, the effort of young men bringing peace and freedom, the liberation, and the privileged and fortunate era after the war.
We met some great people that day. Some where great models and asking people from the re-enactment group to be photographed was no problem at all.
And apparently so, nostalgia is not only something we appreciate in photography nowadays. Most of the vehicles are from the 1940’s and and the clothes these guys wear are just as old too.
Getting out with a rangefinder camera, manual exposing and focusing made things even more nostalgic. And I couldn’t resist to add the bleach bypass effect to my photographs for more drama. Even though a lot of the exposures ended up deleted.
And I really liked the subjective story in the last photograph, although I wasn’t really sure I saw the shoe strings being tied in the truck through the rangefinder.

Absolutely wonderful work. I’m not a color person but these tones work very well. The composition is spot-on. I get the feeling that I time travelled there. 🙂

Hoi Wouter, misschien een beetje herhaling…maar dit is een geweldige serie! Ik ben een zwart/wit liefhebber maar dit is zo sterk in deze kleuren. Alhoewel ik niet zo´n BMK fan ben….. dit is er een serie voor..

I really like what you’ve done here Wouter. May I ask what you use to post process the bleach bypass effect?
I used Color Efex Pro for the bleach bypass, but lowered the contrast and brightness to slightly reduce the effect.
Erg strak. Vind de man met Parachutes erg mooi en ook de vrouw met haar warme blik. Waarom schrijf je dat je veel gedelete hebt?

Ik ben gewend geraakt aan autofocus en dan is handmatig scherpstellen op f/1.4 met een meetzoekercamera weer een hele uitdaging. Uiteindelijk bleken toch behoorlijk wat foto’s verkeerde scherptepunten te hebben. En daarnaast is het ook gewoon goed om streng te zijn bij je selectie. Zo heb ik over de foto van de vrouw juist heel erg getwijfeld of ik de foto wel in mijn selectie wou houden. Binnenkort wil ik deze serie ook meenemen naar de fotoclub en dan mag ik maximaal 5 foto’s meenemen. Er zal dus één foto moeten sneuvelen en dat kan of de vrouw of de man met de helm op worden. Ik ben er echter nu nog niet over uit. Ik laat het dan ook een paar weken rusten alvorens ik de definitieve keuze maak.

Het gaat natuurlijk helemaal je eigen keuze worden, maar wat mij betreft heeft de foto van de vrouw duidelijk de voorkeur. De achtergrond draagt bij aan het verhaal van de dag en het oogcontact met de vrouw geeft de foto extra spanning. Mooie serie, te gek dat je de kans kreeg om je met de M8 uit te leven.
En zie, daarom denk ik ook dat het nu goed is de serie een paar weken te laten rusten alvorens ik mijn keuze maak. Fotograferen met de M8 was weer een bijzondere kans en ik vind het fotograferen met een meetzoekercamera toch wel een prettige ervaring. De meetzoeker is erg helder en groot en verder alles basis. Jammer eigenlijk dat er op het gebied van digitale camera’s geen goedkopere alternatieven zijn.

I think these photographs are very moving, and despite the fact that you were using an unfamiliar camera and lenses, they are also spectacularly and instinctively seen and captured. I also like the way the neutral background complements the color photographs. The occasion must mean a lot to you emotionally, and it gives these pictures a powerful thrust. Thank you!

We often take pride from the operations that succeeded in World War II like D-day and the Liberation, but try to forget the operation that failed and affected the lives of many young men from countries like the UK, Canada, and the US.
With Operation Market Garden the allies hoped that they could enforce a rapid breakthrough to Germany to end the war before 1945. The allies (Montgomery in particular) ignored intelligence information about the presence of German forces in the neighborhood of Arnhem. On September 17 the Garden operation (moving army from Southern Netherlands) made too little progress and the Market section of the operation (the parachute brigades) where spread too much and failed to set up proper communication. And they got more resistance then expected from German troops.
It changed the lives of many including the inhabitants of the towns that got engulfed in heavy fighting, especially Oosterbeek and Arnhem. It stopped the allied forces in their effort to end the war. The Americans fought their way through the Bulge in the winter and crossed the Rhine in 1945 from France. While the south of the Netherlands was liberated, the people above the demarcation line lived for another half years in occupied territory and many suffered the hunger winter killing thousands of Dutch civilians.
But there is still great gratitude for those soldiers who tried to capture the three bridges across the rivers Maas, Waal, and Rhine (the main objective of the operation), because they got it hard. And that still lives on today. Maybe a reason why so many veterans keep coming back to the event.

Mijn commentaar is een beetje meer van hetzelfde, maar ik moet toch kwijt dat ook ik dit een geweldige serie vind. Sterke compo’s, focus op precies goede plek, mooie kleuren/naberwerking. Voor wat et waard is: als ik er 1 zou moeten weglaten, zou dat de 2e foto zijn. De foto van de vrouw is een van de toppers.
Bedankt voor je reactie. Ik ben er zeker nog uit, dus haast ik mijn keuze ook niet. Ik ga eerst een rustig afstand nemen van deze serie en kijk over een maand weer terug.
Wat een schitterende resultaten heb je weten neer te zetten met de M8. De scherptediepte is geweldig en draagt zoveel bij aan de compositie. Lijkt me heerlijk om eens met de M8 te mogen fotograferen, ik ben best wel een beetje jaloers op je 😉
Bedankt Piet. De M8 is zeker een heerlijke camera om mee te fotograferen, maar ik denk dat die 35mm Summilux lens er zeker een even grote bijdrage aan heeft geleverd. Wel jammer dat dit normaal gesproken een veel te dure combinatie is (en dan met name die lens). En dan ook te denken dat de eigenaar van de M8 ook een M9 heeft.
perfect focus is highly overrated, especially on a rangefinder… i hope you kept those that weren’t exact because sometimes movement, feel, and the moment are more more important than perfection! you may not see it now (too close), but you probably will later in looking back.
I can make that distinction, Cam. I am happy with close to in-focus. I believe so much is overrated nowadays. But from the experience I’ve gathered I do also know what will work and not.

Of the selected photographs only the portrait of the man is perfectly focused. All others not, but it is no issue. The compositions just makes these photographs work.
Strakke serie Wouter! Voor mij is de foto met de dame (nr 4) echt mijn favoriet. De foto straalt veel nostalgie uit en de expressie van de dame maakt het beeld compleet. Deze foto doet mij denken aan een scene van een oorlogsfilm. Knap gedaan. Ook de kleuren zijn een geheel, solide tinten die passen bij een autentieke sfeer. En het fotograferen met een rf is een genot, en vooral met een M8.
Bij het maken van de foto van de vrouw was er vanwege het licht door de zoeker nauwelijks iets te zien. Ik zag alleen contouren. Gelukkig gaven de contouren voldoende voor de vorm van de compositie. Het scherptepunt bepalen was echter wel lastiger, maar ik ben verbaasd hoe dit toch goed uit pakte.
An excellent and enjoyable series, Wouter. It is great to see that this commemoration continues year in and year out.
A soldier from my hometown of Stoke-on-Trent won a posthumous VC, Britain’s highest medal for valour, at Arnhem.

Wooww, dit is echt een hele mooie serie! Ik ben maar een hobby fotografe, dus ik heb er niet echt verstand van, maar ik vind het echt prachtig! Net als Jan ben ik ook een zwart/wit liefhebber, zeker met onderwerpen als deze. Het geeft net dat beetje extra’s.
