Last week I visited the former coal mine industrial complex Zollverein in Essen, Germany. Not really knowing what to expect I was positively surprised by the sheer size of the complex. Especially the huge coking plant is very impressive. It is very photogenic location and I had a good time photographing there.
My next blog post will be my impressions of the Ricoh GR.

wow…
Thanks.
Great set. Especially like #2 & #3. 🙂
Thank you. I had a hard time editing to make a final selection.
Dat moet heerlijk fotograferen zijn geweest!
Absoluut Inge. Echt een interessante locatie. Heel fotogeniek. Wij hadden geluk vanwege het weer en vooral later op de dag erg mooie schaduwpartijen.
Must be a great place to photograph. Saw a documentary about the plant on Swedish television, wanted to go there myself. There´s som kind of annual cultural festival, I think. I realy like pic 2 and the last one.
It really is Tommi. Especially the coking plant (pic 2). It is so incredibly large. I didn’t know about the cultural festival, but would make a good combination with the location.
There are some interresting shut down iron mines not very far from Stockholm, Sweden, where I live. Went there as a teenager. Should perhaps go again, and bring the Ricoh …
OUTSTANDING IMAGES!!!!!! Best Yul

Thank you Yul!
I specially like picture #2 with the monumental building shown in its depth. Processed in black & white and that the building/place is abandoned makes it even more fateful and interesting for the imagination. Hmm, maybe it’s time to visit Essen for a weekend…

The Zollverein is certainly worth the visit. And at the pic 2 position there is a small Biergarten.
Ein biergarten? He, that sounds disappointing. I thought the place was abandoned. Well, at least you managed to avoid the tourists in most of your pictures… 😉
/C.
Abandoned? No, it is an Unesco world heritage. When I was there it wasn’t crowded. I think a lot depends on the season. Winter would be perfect.
Wouter, these are excellent. I love the contrast and deep blacks. Cheers.
Thanks Jorge. The light was really good. It inspired me and the GR handled it really well.
You have some really stunning images here! I’m diggin’ the perspectives you chose.
My feelings and an interesting place came together. Thank you.
Looks like a very photogenic location and excellent photos!
I hope to return some day. It is a very good photographic location, Matty.
Love the visual complexity of #2, Wouter. Detail and contrast is excellent overall.
I love your work, it really is amazing.
If you’re interested I’m starting a project where people submit pictures and each week I compose music to fit one of them.
It would be great if you could take part

a good place to use it for movie i bet. Looks mysterious already on the outside. Inside could be some serious business going on 😛
la 2eme est superbe, j’aime cette belle complexité …………………..
Hello Wouter,
I frequently pop over to your site and see what you are doing. I like these photos, especially the second one. I like the imaginative use of angles too. Quick question. I use the GX100, great camera, my only criticism is as I shoot RAW the very slow write to card times. Is the GX200 any faster in this regard?
Keep it up Wouter
Best Regards
Chris

Hi Chris, I am sorry for not answering your question anytime sooner. Just too much happened in between. The GX200 is a lot faster than the GX100, and the greatest improvement was in writing speed shooting RAW.
Cheers,
Wouter
Hi Wouter,
These photos are worth the time spent on them, really great shots, i love the contrast!
Thanks man.
These are superb compositions. Passed this link on to family & friends. 🙂
