Like Cotton
Finally I had a change to get with my loan camera, a Fujifilm Finepix E900. The E900 is absolutely a different camera. It has a firm grip, but the menu is not so intuitively. The camera produces nicely exposed jpegs, but with quite some noise reduction. There is a lot of smearing. Thankfully the camera can also save RAW files. The writing times are certainly longer than with the GX100 (, but it is already a camera from 2005).
I prefer to use the camera in aperture mode. In combination with the EV compensation button you get a live histogram. The camera has a optical viewfinder, but it is very inaccurate and hardly usable. The RAW files are handled quite nicely by Lightroom. I feel you can’t push the RAW files as much as the Ricoh files though.
But, I think it not really fair to compare both cameras. The E900 is a camera from 2005, and the GX100 was introduced two years later.
Here below you see an example of this camera I made today.

If I look at that picture, indeed, I think you would have made a more dramatic look using your GX100!
Sorry you’re not enjoying the Fuji as much as your Ricoh. But this is still a lovely shot. The clouds look very happy, if such a thing is possible.
I could better say I am not enjoying the Fuji as much as the Ricoh. But honestly, at the moment I don’t enjoy the Ricoh at all.
Besides that, the Fuji is a different cup of tea. With a maximum wide angle of 32mm there is a clear difference. The LCD screen is much smaller too. In 2005 it was a good camera. The biggest pro of the Fuji is the build quality of the lens. A very tight fit, no “wobbling”, just the way it should be.
Cheers,
Wouter
I was just thinking of something quite ironic.
The northern part of the Midwest was settled by European farmers who liked the land because it looked like their home in Europe. I am a descendant of those farmers.
Now, I’m feeling homesick for the Midwest where I was raised. I enjoy your pictures of the Netherlands because they remind me of the Midwest.
Many Dutch people moved to Michigan, because it reminded them of the Netherlands. Many places there still have Dutch names, like Holland, Zeeland, and Lansing. Nowadays most dairymen move to Texas, or Idaho. My relatives in the States have dairies too in Idaho.
The Fuji E900 was on my shortlist a while ago when I was looking at buying a new camera. It ended up with me getting the GRD instead.
Looking at this picture I can see what you mean that you can’t push the files as much. The picture does not have the same range as your GX100 pictures. Still, it is good that you at least have a camera to use while Ricoh tries to sort out the GX for you.
Considering the age of the E900 (launched in 2005) it is still a pretty good camera. But it becomes visible too how these cameras have developed in the last few years regarding image quality. In RAW the E900 seems noisier than the GX100 at ISO 100.
At the moment the E900 is absolutely the better camera. No dust and fully functional.
It´s great to have you back posting anyhow!!
Erik.
