Before and after
On March 2 I posted the following photograph on this blog.
I made this photograph on February 16 before these trees were cut. In the meantime these trees are cut and the cutdown trees are removed. They started the preparations for extanding this section of the A12 highway with two additional lanes for the ever increasing traffic. In the upcoming weekend they will tear down the bridge from where I made both photographs. Below is a photograph I made on March 24.

All photographs by Wouter Brandsma
I will add an extra photograph this weekend when they start tearing down the bridge. The new bridge and the additional traffic lanes will be finished in 2009.
Our hunger for further economical growth is unstoppable with more traffic, tarmac, and industrial land.

Wouter, it was a sad picture. It reminds me of a new development near my home. The developers flattened all of the trees, built new homes, planted little trash trees on each lawn and then grandly named it the Oaks of Devonshire. Stupid on two levels. We’re an ocean away from Devonshire and the razed the oaks and planted ash.
Thanks for the photo. I really liked it.
Harry
Thank you Harry. The most stupid thing about industrial development is that companies often use a property for 15 or 20 years before they want to expand. Cities accomandate these companies with new development projects leaving the older industrial land deserted. Even a small populated place (less than 1,000 civilians) in the Netherlands develops an industrial land.
And despite increasing fuel prices we keep on commuting, contributing to the profits of the fuel companies and tax incomes!
Cheers,
Wouter
The pure esence of that “perfect” social system called capitalism..I can´t understand how we can be so idiotic sometimes. I can´t remember the last time I saw a farm. A (non industrial) propper farm with vegetables and animals and all the stuff you would expect from a place dedicated to PROVIDE FOOD. Yes, our beloved and intelligent polititians, continue to substitute our food with machines and offices, fancy design steal and glass. Soon, very soon the third world will have it´s chance, payback time is dangerously close..
Yes Erik, China and India are closing the gab. But they, together with the western world, are draining up the world resources. Roger Waters, former singer and leader of Pink Floyd, published an outstanding album in 1992 about our western society: Amused to Death. He wrote:
Can’t you see
It all makes perfect sense
Expressed in dollars and cents
Pounds, shillings, and pence
Very impressive picture that shows exactly what we’re doing to the nature around us. The first shot was very idylic but is now cold and barren. Where will this lead us to?
