Sigma DP1
17Feb08
Sigma finally introduced the longly awaited DP1. The DP1 is a small camera with a full frame sensor, the same as in the DP14, with a prime 28mm lens (though only f4 as maximum aperture). It will be available in April.
It looks like Ricoh finally gets some serious competition in the “high end compact camera with a prime lens” league. On several forums there has been large debates whether the camera would be good enhough and how it would be working with higher ISO settings. The maximum ISO will be 800, but I guess it can be changed with a firmware update. On the following blog you can see very good B&W photos. made with the SD14 with high ISO settings. They look really good.

A note to the pictures on the blog you’re pointing to: The DP1 lens is sharper than the lens I’m using (12-24) and therefore you would get even better results. Second, the DP1 has ISO800 as “top” ISO – and with Black and white you can go ISO1600, ISO3200 and ISO6400 manually. And with the same sensor as the SD14 I can tell you that the result will be very very nice and film like.
The sharpness of the prime lens will even help to make the noise apear stronger. It is also great to read that you can manually adjust the ISO settings with B&W.
Thanks for your fast response and thank you for sharing your wonderful work.
Btw, I’m not sure that noise will appear as “more” with a sharper lens, but real details will be more pronounced. But maybe stronger is he word.
